Affiliate Marketing is Revolutionizing Retail Sales

Years ago, people who had information to sell typically published books, which were mostly sold in retail stores. The process was awkward and expensive, and only people with a lot of money or those who attracted the attention of major publishers were able to market their work. With the increasing importance of the World Wide Web, the nature of how information is marketed has been revolutionized, making it easier than ever for people with information to share to sell their knowledge.

The explosive growth of electronic business has created a new form of providing information, called affiliate marketing. With traditional retailing, a business had to purchase merchandise from a wholesaler, pay to store it until it was sold and hope that he or she could sell it. If a sale was made, the store kept a small portion as profit. Affiliate marketing changes the very structure of how products are sold by eliminating the need for the retailer to buy the product ahead of time and stock it. All the retailer, or affiliate, must do is advertise the product. It isn't even necessary for the retailer to stock the product at all.

The principal products in modern affiliate marketing are either software or electronic books, known as e-books, which can quickly be delivered by electronic download once the sale is completed. All the retailer or affiliate has to do is promote the products to potential buyers. If a sale is made, the buyer can download the product from the publisher and the affiliate receives a portion of the sale price.

The changes in how products are sold through affiliate marketing are good for both the affiliate and the creator or publisher of the product. The affiliate can devote his time exclusively to promotion; there is no need to manage the product at all. By aggressively promoting their products, both the retailer and the creator benefit without the expensive overhead previously necessary in retail sales. The publisher of the product benefits from motivated retailers, as the entire process is directly performance-based.

Affiliate marketing is regularly advertised as a “sure fire” method of making money while doing little work. That kind of hype is misleading; what you get out of anything is directly related to how much work you apply to it. For sufficiently motivated retailers, affiliate marketing can be quite profitable. Locating products to offer for sale is quite easy, and people who are interested can easily find lists of items to offer for sale at sites such as Clickbank.com. For those who are curious about retail sales without the traditional trouble, affiliate marketing is one possible road to success.
