The Web has changed our lives significantly in the past ten years or so. It began as a curiosity and rapidly became something that no one can live without. Need tickets for a ballgame? Go get them. Need a movie review in a pinch? It's on the Internet. Want to make a lot of money without having a store? Set up a Website and you're ready to go. Of all of the things that the World Wide Web has changed, nothing has changed as much as retail.
The Internet now makes it simple for anyone to have a retail presence without competing with the likes of Wal-Mart. With the advent of affiliate marketing, retailers don't have to stock product anymore. Through affiliate marketing, a Website owner merely registers with a publisher, advertises a product on his own Website, and provides a link to a site where the prospective customer can buy it. Should the customer buy, the site owner, or "affiliate" gets a portion of the sale. It seems to be a perfect way to sell, as there is no overhead for the seller. You just need a Website or a mailing list.
Unfortunately, the vast majority of affiliate marketers make very little to no money at all. The "there's nothing to it!" approach to selling has led many unprepared people to rush into affiliate marketing, convinced that they will be rich as soon as they put their Website online. What is the secret that the creators or publishers who encourage affiliate sales do not tell you?
The secret that no one is eager to discuss is that in order to sell, you have to have customers. The problem of getting traffic is what no one wants to talk about. The most difficult thing to do in the world of Internet commerce is to attract traffic to your site. If you are selling Product X as an affiliate, you may not be alone, and your brand spanking new Website is forced to compete with the publisher of That product in addition to every other affiliate the company has in order to make sales. If you have a site, you must have visitors. What can you do about it?
There are several things you can do, and a Web search for "Web traffic" will almost certainly provide a lot more more suggestions. You can create articles and publish them to article directories, which will soon lure traffic to your Website. You can modify your Website to be search engine "friendly" by learning about search engine optimization (SEO) techniques or by acquiring one of several SEO programs. You can purchase advertising;
Google Adwords is but one place to do it.
If you can conquer the Web traffic problem, you can, without a doubt, make a great deal of money on the Internet. You should, though, consider that the task of building Web traffic is a difficult one, and it is probably the biggest obstacle standing between you and potential sales. You should not be discouraged by the problems associated with bringing visitors to your site if you are involved in affiliate marketing.
