A spokesman Aiyaz Akber said a large number of police personnel have been deployed near his Hyderpora house since early Wednesday morning.
He said there was no justification for putting Geelani under house arrest as no public meeting was scheduled on Wednesday.
However, he said Geelani was to lead demonstrations in protest against the human rights violations on Thursday.
A senior officer informed Geelani that he had been put under house arrest and cannot leave until further orders.
On Tuesday, Geelani was put under house arrest to prevent him from addressing a press conference at Hurriyat headquarters at Rajbagh.
However, he later addressed the press conference at his Hyderpora residence.
