What is a functional resume and how do you know if you should be using it?
A functiional resume is a resume format that is for people who do not want to use a chronological resume. This may include people who have had very diverse experiences in their work history that don't add up to a clear-cut career path. Others for whom it would be adviseable to use a functional resume would be those who have changed careers, had gaps in their careers due to raising families or illness, people who's experience has come mainly through volunteer work or college students with minimal experience unrelated to the field for which they are applying for.
If trying to use a chornological resume, people in these categories would find it hard not to draw attention to the gaps in their work history, but when using a functional resume, it enables them to showcase their relevant skills regardless of where those skills were obtained. Sometimes a functional resume would also be used by overqualified applicants wanting to deemphasize a lengthy job history. Sometimes this can showcase an applicants skills and put them to the forefront of the interview process. Afterall, this is the goal of a functional resume.
