Vacationing in Thailand, truly the land of smiles, rolls back years of stressful living, so even though I’m old enough to know better, it was not unusual for me to be getting around on a motor scooter recently in this beautiful corner of the world.
Jomtien Beach is about 2 hours south of Bangkok by car (the taxi ride is less than $25!) and just over the hill from the fabulous resort town of Pattaya. I stayed at the Silver Sands Villa – a 3 star hotel right on the beach, with two beautiful swimming pools and super friendly staff, for all of $12.50 a day if you negotiate a monthly rate, including breakfast! In fact, for about $1,000 a month, you can live like royalty in this fascinating Kingdom.
Anyway, back to my motor scooter and the minor accident that prompted this article. I was traveling at no more than 20 miles per hour but a combination of too sudden braking to avoid another motor scooter, and loose gravel on the road, was enough to tip me over the handle bars with a large bump on my head, a broken toe and lots of painful cuts and abrasions.
The friendly Thais nearby quickly arranged transportation – one of the many converted pick up trucks that you can flag down in most areas - and two very concerned Thais even accompanied me to the hospital. No frantic 911 calls, no waiting for the ambulance, just caring people doing whatever was necessary to get me to the Bangkok Pattaya hospital in the fastest time possible.
When we reached the hospital 20 minutes later I was feeling quite sorry for myself, but my reception there was so comforting. Two friendly nurses quickly sized up the situation, transferred me to a wheelchair and within minutes I was in the emergency room being looked over by the doctor, with my wounds tended so gently by the two nurses. My head and foot was x-rayed (luckily no permanent damage), ointments and bandages applied, medications prescribed and a follow up visit scheduled. No waiting, no language problems, the most up to date equipment, U.S. and UK trained doctors – and the total bill was under $100, including the x-rays, prescription drugs and follow up visit one week later. But what really did it for me was the friendly gentle staff.
