Kuch Kuch Hota Hai
By Author | On March 16, 2006 | In Movies | 307 Viewings | Rated

This was the fourth of five hits starring Kajol and Shah Rukh Khan:

  • Baazigar (1993)
  • Karan Arjun (1995)
  • Dilwale Dulhania Le Jayenge (1995)
  • Kuch Kuch Hota Hai (1998)
  • Kabhi Khushi Kabhie Gham (2001)

The very popular Rahul (Shah Rukh Khan) and the tomboy Anjali (Kajol) are students at St. Xavier College. Rahul has a crush on Anjali, but whenever he tries to tell her how he feels about her, she dismisses his advances as jokes. Later, it becomes clear that she returns his feelings, but is too shy to let him see her vulnerability.

Tina (Rani Mukerji) enrolls at St. Xavier. She is beautiful, feminine, and sophisticated, everything that the brusque Anjali is not. Rahul falls hard for Tina. Anjali, in the meantime, has worked up the courage to tell Rahul that she cares for him -- but as she starts to tell her secret, Rahul tells her about his love for Tina. Anjali smiles and wishes him luck and then flees college in a fit of despair.

Tina and Rahul marry. Tina dies during childbirth, leaving eight letters to her newborn daughter (Sana Saeed), who is also called Anjali. Anjali Jr. opens one letter each year. The last letter tells the child that while Rahul loved and cherished Tina, he had even deeper and stronger feelings for his first love, Anjali.

Rahul has refused to remarry; he has thrown himself into his work with the intensity of desperation. Anjali Jr. believes that the older Anjali can make her beloved father happy again, and decides to help her father reclaim his lost love. She recruits her doting grandparents as accomplices.

The unlikely conspirators locate Rahul's old flame and contrive to make Rahul and Anjali meet again. Rahul soon finds old feelings reviving. However, there is a complication: Anjali has bowed to her family's wishes and is engaged to another man. Complications ensue, but all ends well.

Some strict critics believe this movie is based on the movie Sleepless in Seattle. Both movies involve a young child who wants a mom, and goes to great lengths , such as leaving her home to look for her, to get her. Also, another similarity noted is the TV request to find her in KKHH which is compared to the radio request in SIS.

Trivia

  • Shahrukh Khan and the child actress (Sana Saeed) who played his daughter reprise their roles as Rahul and Anjali in the 2000 Salman Khan-Rani Mukerji movie Har Dil Jo Pyar Karega.
  • High-profile Bollywood actresses Twinkle Khanna, Tabu, Urmila Matondkar, Aishwarya Rai, Raveena Tandon and Karisma Kapoor were all offered the role of "Tina Malhotra" but turned it down. Rani Mukerji, who accepted it, won her first Filmfare Best Supporting Actress Award for this memorable role.
  • During the bicycle sequence in the first song of the movie, Kajol loses control over her bike, falls, faints and injures her knee. The movie cuts shortly before that, the un-cut version is included in the DVD of the movie. Kajol says that was her favorite part of the movie even though she can't remember the incident.
  • You can see choreographer Farah Khan in two cameo appearances: in the beginning, shortly before Shahrukh Khan's character is late for a meeting with his daughter, you can see her argueing with a man and later during the Neelam Show where she plays the girlfriend of Nikhil Advani, the associate director, who dumps his previous girlfriend.
  • This is the first of three movies where Shahrukh Khan, Kajol and Rani Mukerji play together. The other two are Kabhi Khushi Kabhie Gham and Kal Ho Naa Ho, though Rani had a cameo in Kabhi Khushi Kabhie Gham and both of them had a cameo in Kal Ho Naa Ho.
